work
My aesthetic and style varies. Originally I was a photographer, focused on large and medium format analogue photography. Theft of my entire uninsured photography kit pushed me into painting and drawing.
These days I’ve relaxed more into how I make and become “colour led”. I start with a colour and work from there, adding texture and depth while the “subject” waits to introduce itself. The only truly consistent aspect of my work across all these mediums and forms has been my intent. I am fascinated with how we connect (with each other) and this is what I explore.
Mixed Media

100 small mixed media paintings inspired by Lye Bow Gardens
Most days as the light is starting to end, I stroll through the gardens with a cup of tea in hand. Being an historic property the gardens at Lye Bow are extensive and diverse. These mixed media studies are based on my garden life here at Lye Bow, and my connection to all the previous caretakers.
Still Life

When I use vintage china, cutlery and tools, or wear vintage jewellery and military adornments I think of who else may treasured these things. I imagine them washing the cups and safely storing them in their special place. I love that sense of connection across time to unknown women.
It was this sense of connection that had inspired a body of large scale works focusing on heirloom pieces.
Pen & Ink Drawings

I learnt a great technique for working through personal challenges in life when I was part of the 100 Days Project. Each day for 100 days I did a small ink drawing relating to feelings about the recent death of my mother. I took this a step further at the sudden end on my marriage and did a drawing a day until there was nothing left to be said (on that topic)
These are are some of those drawings.
Commissions

Over the years I have undertaken a number of commissions of varying subjects including portraits, still life, floral, motorcycles, dogs… you name it. If you like my images and have something particular in mind then get in touch and let’s collaborate.
